Rittenhouse Square is one of five original squares that date back to the original city plan.  It's original position was that of Southwest Square.  Today it is the site of annual flower markets and outdoor art exhibitions, and where office workers stop by to eat their lunch on the benches; parents bring children to play; and many people stroll through to admire the plants, sculptures, and feed squirrels.  The square holds numerous popular sculptures, among them the dramatic Lion crushing a serpent.  Rittenhouse  Square is bound to the east by S 18th Street and north by Walnut Street.
